Primary Clue (Master Detective)
GUYS. I woke up at 9:10 this morning with no plans for primary, which church staring at 10:30. I walked out of my room and saw the game "Master Detective" on my table downstairs from last night's game night. And BAM! Best idea ever. This was SO. MUCH. FUN. It also requires only ONE thing from you--and that is any copy or version of the game Clue. I have the Master Detective version from the 90's (which is THE BEST version, by the way) so this was written for that. Master Detective has more rooms, weapons, and people, but if you have the standard version it works just as well. Actually--better, because it takes less time. And this things was a HUGE HIT! The kids absolutely loved this one!

Here is how the game works:
Each room is a primary song. Each person is who sings Each weapon is a way to sing As the kids came in, I had the clue game already set up. They were so excited and couldn't wait to see what we were doing! Now you could explain this in lots of ways, but for me, since its the beginning of a new year, I told the kids that we are trying to choose songs for next year's program. We need to find which song, how to sing it, and who is going to sing it! I have chosen one song from the list provided for each month. Since I used the master detective version, this was easy as there are twelve rooms. First, I had a child choose a random card from the rooms, suspects, and weapons cards in the game. I looked at them so I knew the answer, and then set them aside. You won't use the other cards again. Tell the children we will be trying to find the song that was chosen, and if they find it, it will be one of the ones included in this year's program! |
Next, I had a child come up and roll the dice, and then go choose a room to go to. They then chose a person and a weapon. The person was based on someone in our ward--so if they picked "pink" that was the Young Women's President, Sister Knapp. And that means all the girls will sing. And if they chose the rope as their weapon, then we will sing the song going louder and softer as directed. And if they entered the Conservatory, that room is the song Faith. Then we'd sing it. If any of the three items they chose were one of the three chosen at the beginning, I'd tell them they got ONE of them right (or two or whatever) but not which one it was. I wrote on the board the ones that might be it. You could also save time by just telling them which one is right and then letting them continue to choose till they find the other two.
As they sang the songs, I'd put a marker in that room with the name of the song so they knew we'd done that one. If they got the final answer and all three correct, I had a small prize for them.
This was fun and took virtually no prep, other than having the game.

I have a Word document here that you can open up and edit to fit your own needs. Change the names, rooms, etc. Then you are ready to go!
